The potoo or poor-me-one or ghost bird is native to the forests of Nicaragua or Argentina and is haunted by a curse. Its song, similar to a human moan, is almost as chilling as its pupils, that are surrounded by huge glowing eyes that instill a feeling of inevitable panic in those unwary enough to stare at them. Its habits do nothing to avoid this impression: it loves silence and solitude.
